Bringing Humanity Back to the Real Estate Process

This month marks my ninth year in real estate. Nine years of guiding clients through one of life’s most personal transitions in one of the most competitive markets in the country. Over that time, one word has come to reshape how I think about this work: connection.

Not just networking. Not just exceptional service. But real connection—between clients, between agents, and between the people on opposite sides of a negotiation.

When Real Estate Becomes a Battlefield

As I’ve guided buyers and sellers through deals this year, I’ve felt a definite shift in the market, in how people are approaching transactions, and most importantly, in myself.

Too often, real estate feels impersonal. Buyers and sellers rarely meet. Agents only discuss the essential details of the transaction. Emotions, which are always part of the process, get funneled into stress, frustration, or distrust.

I’ve seen how overwhelming and counterproductive transactions can become when humanity is missing. Deals stall. Emotions escalate. People walk away feeling like they’ve been through a battle instead of experiencing a milestone. And I kept thinking, there has to be a better way.

A Different Way to Negotiate

I started asking myself, what if we approached each deal not as a battleground, but as a shared goal, a collaborative effort to help two sides meet in the middle? What if we negotiated not just on price, but on purpose, uncovering what truly matters on both sides? What if we stopped treating real estate as confrontation, and started seeing it for what it truly is, a life transition? One chapter closing. Another beginning.

Sometimes that chapter is joyful—a dream home, a fresh start, a long-awaited move. Other times, it’s tinged with difficulty—a loss, a forced relocation, an unexpected life change. These are deeply human moments. And they deserve to be met with care and understanding.

It Starts With Me

This year, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to bring more humanity to the way we do real estate. And I’ve realized—it starts with me.

“I’m starting with the man in the mirror,
I’m asking him to change his ways…”

These lyrics from Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror have quietly guided my thinking lately. They’ve become a reminder that change, whether in the industry or in how I work, starts from within.

Because no matter how competitive the market, I believe this:

  • You can advocate fiercely and still lead with heart.

  • You can negotiate strategically and still be fair.

  • You can “win” without making the other side lose.

And I’ve seen how this shift in mindset changes everything.

When we treat real estate as a collaboration, not a confrontation, we open the door to trust, flexibility, and better outcomes, for everyone involved.

Empathy as a Strategic Advantage

There’s this idea that empathy softens your edge. I don’t believe that. I believe empathy sharpens it.

Learning someone’s story, what brought them to this moment, what they truly value, can unlock the kind of insight that wins deals. It helps clients feel seen. It helps negotiations move forward with less friction. And it leads to faster, more thoughtful decision-making.

This is the change I’m making:

  • More open conversations with colleagues
  • More transparency with clients
  • More effort to see the people, not just the numbers

Because when everyone feels seen and heard, things move more smoothly. Deals close with clarity, not exhaustion. And people leave the experience with a sense of trust and satisfaction, not regret.

“If you wanna make the world a better place,
Take a look at yourself and then make a change…”

Looking Ahead

Real estate will always involve contracts, disclosures, and negotiation, but at its heart, it’s still about people. About how they move through life’s biggest transitions. About the stories they’re living, and the chapters they’re beginning.

If we can bring more connection, curiosity, and care into each transaction, we don’t just change the way deals get done, we change how people feel about the process.

It starts with a conversation. It starts with connection. And, like the song says, it starts with the person in the mirror.
